Prostate SR contains a standardized extract from the berries of the saw palmetto plant, Serenoa repens, along with a mixed phytosterol (plant sterol) blend providing beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols and stanols (campesterol, stigmasterol, brassicasterol, beta-sitostanol, campestanol and other sterols). Prostate SR is designed to promote normal urinary tract function in men,* and its formulation is overseen by an advisory board of leading academic physicians and scientists. The daily recommended dosage (2 sofgels) of Prostate SR provides:

320 mg Saw Palmetto extract, standardized to contain 85-95% fatty acids and sterols
500 mg Phytosterol blend, standardized to contain at least 95% free sterols, including:
   beta-sitosterol (40-50%), campesterol, stigmasterol, brassicasterol,
   beta-sitostanol, campestanol and other sterols

Because of saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol's efficacy, there are many products on the market today. Unfortunately, many are poorly made and some don't even contain the amounts of ingredients listed on the label. In a study published in the Journal of Urology in July 2002, independent lab tests were conducted on popular brands of saw palmetto supplements, comparing the actual content of saw palmetto extract to the claim on the bottle label. The range of differences from the stated doses was between -97% to +140%. Half of the sampled brands actually contained less than 20% of the stated dose. Because the quality of mass market saw palmetto supplements varies so greatly, many men are not getting the amount of active ingredients needed to see results.
